Jeffrey Epstein's Autopsy Shows Broken Hyoid, Other Neck Fractures

On Thursday, an autopsy found Jeffrey Epstein suffered multiple fractures and broken neck bones, including the hyoid bone, which is near the Adam's apple.

The registered sex offender and multimillionaire financier was facing federal charges for allegedly sex trafficking minors. He was found unresponsive in his cell on Aug. 10 after an apparent suicide

An expert at the National Association of Medical Examiners, who was familiar with the autopsy report but not involved in Epstein's autopsy itself, told The Washington Post that the breaks found in Epstein's neck can occur in suicides by hanging, especially among older people. But he also said a broken hyoid is more common when someone is strangled in a homicide.

Barbara Sampson, New York City's chief medical examiner, listed Epstein's cause of death as "pending" and said: "In all forensic investigations, all information must be synthesized to determine the cause and manner of death. Everything must be consistent; no single finding can be evaluated in a vacuum."

CNN reports that the medical examiner is waiting to rule on Epstein's death until she gets the results of a toxicology report.

About a month before Epstein's death, he was placed on suicide watch. But after psychological assessments, he was taken off suicide watch at the end of July. He originally had a cell mate who was later removed for undisclosed reasons.

Two officers were responsible for monitoring Epstein, and it's still being investigated as to what they were doing when he died. As of Tuesday, they've been placed on administrative leave. It was also announced that the New York Metropolitan Correctional Center's warden was being moved temporarily amid ongoing investigations into Epstein's death by the FBI and Department of Justice.
